ACOMS Mobile

Managing patient flow through the facility is critical to a hospital’s operations. It is imperative for a hospital’s administration to proactively identify bottlenecks that hamper patient flow through their facility. Therefore, real-time visibility to the ever-changing demand and the available capacity is Crucial, for the administrators and the front-line care givers alike, to make better operational decisions. Accessing information in real-time has its own challenges especially for clinicians who are constantly on the move. Though ACOMS is real-time system, deployed on a hospital’s intra-net, or accessed over the Internet in a hosted environment; a user needs to be in front of a computer on the network to be able to access it. But the care providers are always on the go - engaged in providing care to their patients, in meetings or just in transit inside or outside the hospital. There are a couple of ways the mobile users can interact with ACOMS.

Alerts

In a hospital, ACOMS may be deployed in dozens of units including acute care, inpatient and ancillary units. Things are constantly changing in a hospital – patients admitted, transferred, discharged, transported, staff coming in, completing their shifts, equipment breaking down, coming back on line and so on. With all these events happening across the hospital, and recorded in ACOMS, the demand and capacity picture is changing hour-by-hour or even minute-by-minute. The Alerts module permits the users to declare certain events as important events from their perspective. When one of these specified events occurs in the system, a preconfigured message is sent to the appropriate user’s mobile device – a text pager, or a cell phone or a wireless PDA. Based on the sphere of each user’s responsibility the selection of the events can be different. For some users it may be important to be notified when a certain criterion changes the status color, say from Yellow to Orange. In some cases, newly triggered interventions may be directed to their mobile device. The selection of events is totally flexible and is customized for each user.

From certain qualified wireless devices, the user may access the ACOMS system and carry out most of the important functions that could be done from their desktops. The users can view the current status of the demand/capacity criteria of their own unit or some other units they normally interact with. The users can also update the values of the criteria, or view and update interventions directly from their mobile devices. The Alerts module is available in the current generally available release. The ACOMS Mobile module will be generally available in the release planned for the 3rd quarter of 2007.
